Product Description
Taken from the medieval carvings 1490 – 1495 from within the choir stalls of Ripon Cathedral. This magnificent and outstanding reproduction carving belongs to a pair of the mythical creature known as a Blemmyae found on one Misericord. This example depicts the classical image of a Blemmyae, that being a head less body with the face being on their chest. It was thought that these 8ft tall creatures lived in what is now modern day Libya & Tunisia. Although being head less and 8ft tall they are rarely shown as evil or bad creatures. This unique pair from Ripon is carved in a very friendly and approachable manner and both wearing shinny modern shoes showing a hint of civilisation and taste. These carvings are a great insight into the believes of the people of the medieval period along with their understanding of the outside world. This piece like most at Ripon Cathedral is in perfect condition and this replica has captured all the detail of the craftsmen that carved this piece over 500 years ago. Comes with wall fixing and product label.
