Dragon #2 (Carlisle Cathedral).
This medieval carving (c.1400) is from the choir screens from which you enter the choir at Carlisle Cathedral. This beautiful carving is of a Dragon curled up and most interestingly seems to be scratching his head. Although the dragon is often thought to be a feared fire-breathing beast, this depiction shows a more caring and tame Dragon.
It would have been without doubt to the ordinary person of these times that these creatures really did exist and were part of their believes and understandings of creatures and lands far away. Depicting a beast in this manner could be seen as their authority and fearless nature of what is not really known. The fine detail of the original has once again been captured in this excellent reproduction of a great piece of Medieval English craftsmanship. Comes with wall fixing and product label.
